Do Not Leave Fairy Floss Unattended!

I learnt a valuable lesson on Saturday, fairy floss can not be left out in the open air, let this be a warning to you all.

Charlotte asked for this cake for her party on Saturday (from the recent Good Taste magazine) and it looked easy enough so I was happy to oblige. All went pretty well and the cake was baked and then iced on Saturday morning. We put the cake in the fridge until party time. About an hour before we were going to sing Happy Birthday I took the cake out of the fridge and went back to being the hostess with the mostess (or the mean mum who didn't put a prize in every layer of pass the parcel) depending on how you want to look at it.
When I returned to take the cake out the fairy floss had disappeared into balls of sugar all over the top of the cake, who knew once the air hit it that it would disintegrate. OK well obviously Jeff because he apparently wasn't surprised but you would have thought a warning in the recipe might have been a good idea. I rescued the cake by sprinkling mini marshmallows over the top but it is a lesson I thought you should all know.

i feel your pain. i got a bag of fairy floss in my santa sack for christmas and when I put everything back in the sack the bag ripped a little so it all shrunk up into nothing-ness. I was shattered.

I had no idea fairy floss would shrivel up! Thanks for the tip.
Fabulous cake...I'd like one of those for my next birthday.

I had no idea about it either - so thanks for the tip.

Your cake still looked amazing!

OOOPS! I would not have had any idea that fairy floss would do such a thing, we had some the other day but ate it too quickly to notice shrinkage.
The Marshmallows really saved the day it looks like they are floating on bumpy clouds.

I didn't know either so thanks for the tip. I know DD would love a cake like that for her birthday but I am such a terrible mum as I will probably just buy one.

Oh dear Cass! I knew it shriveled, have had that happen, but I don't think I would have applied that knowledge when making the cake - especially if thre was no warning. It looks like you saved it well.

Fantastic cake! I've posted about my cake making this week too. Love the marshmallows, they look like they were meant to be there. :)

Goes to show most of us didn't know! Thanks for the very important mummy tip.

And I love that you didn't put a present in every layer of pass the parcel. WHere's the sense of anticipation and suspense? It was there at the party!!

Happy birthday to you too.

The cake still looks gorgeous! I've had some nasty 'running icing' incidents in the past that have needed some quick thinking repair jobs - so frustrating isn't it.
